OUR HISTORY
The need to have a Swahili service was reached after a few people met over a cup of tea in our house @Central Baptist Theological seminary in December of 2003. They saw the necessity of having a Swahili Fellowship in Kansas City. Little did we know that this would grow to be a church as it is now.
Our first meetings took place at the First Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, but we changed the venue later on. The Pastor, Rev. David Nzioka, secured a meeting place at the Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village who offered to support the fellowship from it’s inception.
On November 14, 2004, we started our services at 99th and Mission Road, in Overland Park. The new home for our growing fellowship was in a former elementary school building, for many years an annex building of Village Presbyterian Church.
On June 12, 2005, we had the first group of commissioned members of Neema Community fellowship.
On June 18, 2011, Neema Community Church became a fully chartered congregation of Heartland Presbytery. A big celebration followed on June 19th where 150 members signed the charter.
On May 19th, 2013 we celebrated our first Sunday service at a new home located at 9898 W. 95th Street, Overland Park, Kansas. The new meeting place was a true blessing. We gained meeting rooms, classrooms, offices, and a larger sanctuary. Having been blessed with committed servants, Neema continued to grow and expand our mission and service.
On August 15, 2015 we celebrated our first service at a new location, our current home, 621 S. Lee Avenue, Olathe, Kansas. The new larger building allows for continued growth of membership, mission, and service. We have been blessed with many classrooms, meeting rooms, offices, recreation areas, large fellowship hall, beautiful sanctuary, large kitchen, and, lots of parking. Winter of 2016 we began hosting some of the areas homeless for freezing nights, and, opening a pantry twice a week to those in the area that could be blessed with additional food.
We believe in the priesthood of all believers, everybody is welcome to participate. Neema is a vibrant church family, bringing the good news of the Gospel to the lives of God’s children – young and old. Worship is in Swahili and English. We humbly serve the almighty God, and, in the same spirit, we shall continue to serve him. All of God’s Children are welcome to worship with us.
Amani Ya Bwana.
